PCCN has grown to include more than 85% of Maricopa County’s pediatricians and 80% of the area’s pediatric subspecialists. 

Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s offers pediatric neurosurgery, neurology, psychology, psychiatry, developmental pediatrics, and rehabilitation. 

Phoenix Children’s has a robust research enterprise that provides access to leading therapies, novel diagnostics, and clinical management options in Arizona, the Southwest and around the country. 

Phoenix Children’s cancer research is the largest pediatric program of its kind in Arizona and is on the front line of pediatric malignancy and hematologic disorder research. There are currently more than 70 clinical trials offered through the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders for patients with leukemias, lymphomas, solid tumors, brain tumors and rare diseases.


VP, Clinical Systems Position Overview

Phoenix Children’s is seeking a new VP, Clinical Systems to lead a team of 42 professionals (with 2 direct reports).   Reporting to the CIO, the VP will be responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operations of clinical systems. They will also have budgetary responsibility for multi-million-dollar capital and operational budgets. Additionally, the VP stands in for the CIO when he is not available.   

The CIO is straightforward and business savvy. He asks his direct reports to take the lead on achieving system, clinical, and technology objectives. He says there will be many opportunities for the VP to make strong contributions to the organization.The opportunities include ongoing projects, as well as projects arising from Phoenix Children’s growth.    

Phoenix Children’s runs Altera (Allscripts) as its EHR. Allscripts allows direct data access so Phoenix Children’s can do some amazing things with its data.  

Phoenix Children’s frequently builds solutions when there isn’t software on the market to meet pediatric demands. Rather than just buying a solution, the VP, Clinical Systems will sit down with end users, break down problems and solve them innovatively. 

To that end, the Phoenix Children’s IT team, including clinical applications, has a strong partnership with Arizona State University and utilizes students to partner on solving problems through innovation.

Qualifications

Phoenix Children’s seeks a dynamic and innovative leader. They should be adept at dealing with challenging, fast-paced environments. Also, they should have demonstrated success in moving projects from vision to reality. The ability to look beyond vendor solutions and “think outside of the box” are critical. 

To be successful, this VP will need to be a strong collaborator capable of driving change.  They must also be able to communicate the vision of IT technology persuasively.  A strong customer service orientation is critical as well. 

Building relationships with stakeholders and large physician groups will be crucial to success. They must continue to improve governance, providing a “healthy tension” and not just saying “yes”. 

The successful candidate must have demonstrated success leading, growing, and mentoring a team.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years of experience in clinical IT 
  • Experience managing a team of 25+ people 
  • Experience in a multi-facility organization with clinics and physician practices 
  • Budgetary experience 
  • Residency or relocation to the Phoenix area  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Clinical background 
  • Master’s degree

The Information Technology Department is a 125-person highly dynamic and integral part of Phoenix Children’s operations, enabling clinical and operational excellence, as well as serving as a vital strategic partner in changing the world of 21st century healthcare.  Phoenix Children’s utilizes Allscripts Sunrise as its electronic health record. Key upcoming milestones are the construction of a new womens and children’s hospital that will open in 2020, a new free-standing emergency department site, and important initiatives in data, analytics and population health.

The Vice President, Clinical Systems, reports to the CIO and is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operations of the IT clinical applications area. Areas of oversight include the EHR group, a clinical applications department (radiology, cardiology, lab, etc), and an optimization team. This Vice President oversees approximately 40 employees and is responsible for multi-million dollar capital and operating budgets. The Vice President of Infrastructure is a peer of this position. The VP, Clinical Systems will work closely with the CMIO and associate CMIO.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10 years of clinical applications management experience
  • Strong clinical applications management background

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Allscripts Sunrise experience
